I can’t tell you where to download the firmware, but Google and Torrents are your friend.

Once you download it (it’s an ipsw file):

Connect iPod Touch
Hold Shift and Alt (Option on Mac) and click on Update (in iTunes)
Locate .ipsw file
Allow 10-15 minutes for update to install
Enjoy!

As iLounge points out, Apple has made some subtle changes to the iTunes Store in preparation for the launch of the iTunes App Store, which an Apple rep confirmed to me will take place on July 11th.

Today, Apple officially changed the heading on its iPod Games pages from “iPod Games” to “iPod classic and nano Games,” differentiating the current listings from possible future listings for iPod touch- and iPhone-compatible games. In addition, the company has begun listing the date that films will be available for rent on the purchase pages. The second change may be to aid users who had hoped to rent a title and were confused as to why it was available for purchase but not for rent, or as a prelude to pre-orders for automatic film rental downloads to a computer.

Get ready, folks!

  • “The Sopranos”
  • “Sex and the City”

“We’re thrilled to bring this incredible lineup of programming from HBO to the iTunes Store,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes. “These are some of the most talked about television shows ever, as well as some of the most requested by our customers.”

Shows downloaded from the iTunes Store can be watched via iTunes on a Mac or PC, on any video-capable iPod, the iPhone, and the Apple TV. FreeVerse is very excited of their success in the development of iPod Touch and iPhone games. They have been creating and coding games since the first iPhone SDK beta was released in Marchand have now released some public screen shots.

iPod / iPhone Games

The first game Flick Sports is very similar to Wii Sports on the Wii and is planed to launce in June…

“Using the iPhone’s unique flick/pinch feature, we’re working on Golf, Bowling, Soccer, and Baseball (to start). Fun, colorful and quick, these will be ideal games for a modern mobile platform.”

Another game they are working on is called Wingnuts MotoRacer is a motorcycle native game for the iPod Touch which is also be released in June…

“Ah, the wind in your hair, the bugs in your teeth and the open road stretching out in front of you! Using the iPhone’s cool accelerometer, (you know, that doohickey that knows when your iPhone is sideways or not), you can steer your motorcycle to victory in this wild racing game. Awesome characters and a touch of humor, its a Freeverse game after all, will add to the fun.”

They are very excited about their involvement in the development of native Apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch and say many new titles will be on their way. If you can not wait for the June launch of iPod Touch version 2.0 then FreeVerse has posted some Web App games on their site, click here to visit the online FreeVerse iPhone game collection on your Apple Touch device.

NetBlender recently announced a new technology called BD Touch, that connects to the iPod Touch and iPhone and allows the use Blu-ray disc streaming directly from your Blu-Ray player. It sends the information via Wi-Fi and will work with all BD-live enabled devices such as the Sony PS3.

BD Touch

BD Touch enables transfer of digital copies of movies from Blu-ray disc menus, real-time movie details and Blu-ray disc titles, incorporating this data into games using the iPod Touch as a controller.

“Having spent the past decade building interactive video products we are thrilled to bring together two of the most interactive consumer products ever created with BD Touch,” said John Harrington, NetBlender CEO, in a statement. “We began R&D on integrating the two devices right after I experienced the iPhone Multi-Touch interface for the first time.”

They development started when the iPhone SDK was released in March and will continue in R&D until June when it is said to be released. To check out videos and get more information visit the NetBlender Site.

Ever since the iPhone SDK rollout people have been wondering just how powerful a gaming platform the iPhone will turn out to be. We saw some impressive demos at the rollout event and, the ARM processor powering the iPhone and iPod touch runs at nearly twice the clockspeed of the Sony PSP. But what of 3D hardware? How deftly can Apple’s new mobile platform push the polygons?

Based on the recently demonstrated port of id’s Quake 3 to the iPod touch, the answer is: rather deftly, indeed. And as for control, the integrated accelerometers seem rather up to the challenge of delivering precise control to this classic first-person shooter.

Have a look at the demonstration video. It’s a fluid framerate throughout which says much about just what the iPhone platform will offer game developers and game players, alike.
